Carrots’ cancer fighting potential comes from being a non-starchy vegetable as well as a source of carotenoids and other phytochemicals. Beta-carotene is the carotenoid that has received the most attention, but research into carrot’s other compounds and carrots as a whole are underway.

What Current Evidence Shows: AICR/WCRF’s Expert Report and its Updates (CUP)

Carrots are a non-starchy vegetable that contain fiber and carotenoids. After a systematic review of the global scientific literature, AICR/WCRF weighed the strength of the evidence linking these factors to lower risk for several cancers.

Diets high in: CONVINCINGLY lower risk of the following cancers:
Foods containing dietary fiber Colorectal
Diets high in: PROBABLY lower risk of the following cancers:
Non-starchy vegetables Mouth, larynx, pharynx

Open Areas of Investigation: Laboratory Research

In addition to their roles as antioxidants, beta-carotene and alpha-carotene promote cell-to-cell communication, which seems important in maintaining normal control of cell growth.

Luteolin and falcarinol, also found in carrots, decrease cancer cell growth and increase cancer cell death in cell and animal studies.

Open Areas of Investigation: Human Studies

Population studies link foods rich in total carotenoids with lower risk of lung cancer. Larger studies now show protection less clearly than earlier studies; additional research is needed. Several population studies link higher dietary carotenoids, and especially higher blood levels of carotenoids, with lower risk of some types of breast cancer. Because higher blood levels of carotenoids indicate higher vegetable and fruit consumption, these other plant foods and their healthful compounds may play a role.

Limited population studies tentatively link higher amounts of beta-carotene and alpha-carotene in people’s diet and especially their blood levels with modestly lower risk of breast, along with several other cancers. However, beta-carotene in high-dose supplements, especially in smokers, seems to increase lung cancer risk and mortality. Further research is underway in all these areas.

Looking beyond carotenoids, limited population studies of carrots specifically link them with potentially lower risk of lung, cervical, and prostate cancers.

Why has “the War on Cancer” Failed so Miserably?

Writing for the Skeptical Inquirer, Reynold Spector has listed the following six reasons for the failure:

  • We don’t understand the cause/pathogenesis in most cases of cancer
  • Most treatments (except surgery) are nonspecific cell killers and not “smart”
  • Clinical trials and the grant system don’t foster innovation
  • Screening for useful drugs against cancer cells has not worked
  • Animal models of cancer are often inadequate
  • Unproductive “fads” in research come and go

However, while these may factor into the equation of failure, it is believed that this list is yet another example of exactly what’s wrong with the entire system, which is: ignoring the fact that cancer is likely a man-made disease caused primarily by toxic overload.

There is an article that was written a while back ago about a fascinating study into ancient mummies that determined cancer is not a “natural” disease at all, and genetics are not a primary factor. Tumors were extremely rare until recent times, when pollution and poor diet became issues. So why are the medical and science communities, by and large, ignoring these basics?

Getting to the Root of the Problem

There is a strong belief that the cancer rates are escalating because mainstream research is in no way shape or form addressing the underlying cause of most cancers. Instead, most of the research is directed towards expensive drugs that target late stages of the disease and greatly enrich the drug companies but simply do not prevent cancer.

If ever there was an area in which an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of a cure it is with cancer. We strongly believe that if you are able to work your way up to an advanced health plan, you will virtually eliminate your risk of most cancers.

Environmental- and lifestyle factors are increasingly being pinpointed as the primary culprits fueling our cancer epidemic. This includes:

  • Pesticide- and other chemical exposures
  • Processed and artificial foods (plus the chemicals in the packaging)
  • Wireless technologies, dirty electricity, and medical diagnostic radiation exposure
  • Pharmaceutical drugs
  • Obesity, stress, and poor sleeping habits
  • Lack of sunshine exposure and use of “Safe-Non Toxic” Sunscreens

This is clearly not an exhaustive list as such a list would be exceedingly long. For more specifics on consumer products implicated as contributors to cancer, please review the Cancer Prevention Coalition’s “Dirty Dozen” list.

The pharmaceutical researchers would like you to believe they’re doing everything they can to come up with a solution. Yet all we see is research into newer drug therapies. Clearly, they’re not digging close enough to the root of the problem, because if they did, they would have touch on some of these lifestyle issues just mentioned.

From our perspective, you ignore lifestyle factors at your own peril when it comes to cancer… Because, clearly, drug-based “advances” are not making a dent in this progressively widespread disease.

On the contrary, cancer drugs are notoriously toxic and come with devastating, including lethal, side effects. Conventional medicine is so desperate to give the illusion of fighting the good fight that many of these drugs are used despite the fact that they’re not really doing much to prolong or improve the quality of life of those diagnosed with cancer.

The best-selling (and extremely expensive) cancer drug Avastin, for example, was recently phased out as a treatment for metastatic breast cancer after studies concluded its benefits were outweighed by its dangerous side effects. Treating a disease in large part caused by toxins with toxins seems ignorant at best.

We can do better than that!

REAL Cancer Advancements that Need to Become Mainstream Knowledge

In the last 30 years the global cancer burden has doubled, and it will likely double again between 2000 and 2020, and nearly triple by 2030—unless people begin to take cancer prevention seriously things won’t begin to look any better. However, we can turn this trend around, but to do so the medical community must stop overlooking the methods that can actually have a significant impact.

Three cancer advancements in particular merit a special mention. These advancements have not yet been accepted by conventional medicine, and they should be.

Number 1: Vitamin D—There is overwhelming evidence pointing to the fact that vitamin D deficiency plays a crucial role in cancer development. Researchers within this field have estimated that about 30 percent of cancer deaths — which amounts to 2 million worldwide and 200,000 in the United States — could be prevented each year simply by optimizing the vitamin D levels in the general population.

It is thought by some that you can decrease your risk of cancer by MORE THAN HALF simply by optimizing your vitamin D levels with sun exposure. And if you are being treated for cancer it is likely that higher blood levels—probably around 80-90 ng/ml—would be beneficial.

Meanwhile, countless people around the world have an increased risk of cancer because their vitamin D levels are too low due to utter lack of sun exposure.

In terms of protecting against cancer, vitamin D has been found to offer protection in a number of ways, including:

Regulating genetic expression

Increasing the self-destruction of mutated cells (which, if allowed to replicate, could lead to cancer)

Reducing the spread and reproduction of cancer cells

Causing cells to become differentiated (cancer cells often lack differentiation)

Reducing the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones, which is a step in the transition of dormant tumors turning cancerous

Number 2: Optimizing Your Insulin Levels—Normalizing your insulin levels is one of the most powerful physical actions you can take to lower your risk of cancer. Otto Warburg actually received a Nobel Prize for his research on cancer cell physiology in 1934, which clearly demonstrated cancer cells require more sugar to thrive. Unfortunately, very few oncologists appreciate or apply this knowledge today.

High levels of insulin can cause major damage to your body. The most recognized of these is diabetes, but that is far from the only one. As Ron Rosedale, M.D. said in a previous article, Insulin and Its Metabolic Effects:

“It doesn’t matter what disease you are talking about, whether you are talking about a common cold or cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis or cancer, the root is always going to be at the molecular and cellular level, and I will tell you that insulin is going to have its hand in it, if not totally control it.”

The good news is that controlling your insulin levels is relatively straightforward. First, limit your intake of processed foods, grains and sugars/fructose as much as possible to prevent your insulin levels from becoming elevated in the first place.

Number 3: Exercise—If you are like most people, when you think of reducing your risk of cancer, exercise doesn’t immediately come to mind. However, there is some fairly compelling evidence that exercise can slash your risk of cancer.

One of the primary ways exercise lowers your risk for cancer is by reducing elevated insulin levels, which creates a low sugar environment that discourages the growth and spread of cancer cells. Controlling your insulin levels and optimizing your vitamin D level are two powerful steps you can take to reduce your cancer risk. For example, physically active adults experience 50 percent less risk of colon cancer as their sedentary counterparts, and women who exercise regularly can reduce their breast cancer risk by 20 to 30 percent compared to those who are inactive.

Additionally, exercise improves the circulation of immune cells in your blood. Your immune system is your first line of defense against everything from minor illnesses like a cold right up to devastating, life-threatening diseases like cancer.

The trick about exercise, though, is understanding how to use it as a precise tool. This ensures you are getting enough to achieve the benefit, not too much to cause injury, and the right variety to balance your entire physical structure and maintain strength and flexibility, and aerobic and anaerobic fitness levels. This is why it is helpful to view exercise like a drug that needs to be carefully prescribed to achieve its maximum benefit.

Winning the War Against Cancer Begins with Your Personal Choices

You can do a lot, right now, to significantly decrease your cancer risk. Even the conservative American Cancer Society states that one-third of cancer deaths are linked to poor diet, physical inactivity, and carrying excess weight. So, making the following healthy lifestyle changes can go a very long way toward ending the failure-streak and becoming one less statistic in this war against cancer:

Normalize your vitamin D levels with safe amounts of sun exposure. This works primarily by optimizing your vitamin D level. Ideally, monitor your vitamin D levels throughout the year.

Control your insulin levels by limiting your intake of processed foods and sugars/fructose as much as possible.

Get appropriate amounts of omega-3 fats.

Get appropriate exercise. One of the primary reasons exercise works is that it drives your insulin levels down. Controlling insulin levels is one of the most powerful ways to reduce your cancer risks.

Have a tool to permanently erase the neurological short-circuiting that can activate cancer genes. Even the CDC states that 85 percent of disease is caused by emotions. It is likely that this factor may be more important than all the other physical ones listed here, so make sure this is addressed.

Only 25 percent of people eat enough vegetables, so by all means eat as many vegetables as you are comfortable with. Ideally, they should be fresh and organic. Cruciferous vegetables in particular have been identified as having potent anti-cancer properties. Remember that carb nutritional types may need up to 300 percent more vegetables than protein nutritional types.

Maintain an ideal body weight.

Get enough high-quality sleep.

Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners and air pollution.

Can Essential Oils Act As Pain Relievers?

Why use essential oils?

If medications aren’t easing your pain, you might be interested in finding alternative remedies for relief. Essential oils may be one natural way to relieve pain.

Essential oils are highly fragrant substances found within the petals, stems, roots, and other parts of plants. They’re typically removed from the plant though steam distillation.

The oils resulting from this centuries-old technique may improve physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. Each type of oil has its own unique scent and benefits. These oils can be used individually or as blends.

Researchers have found evidence to suggest that certain oils may treat the symptoms of certain ailments, such as:

  • inflammation
  • headaches
  • depression
  • sleep disorders
  • respiratory problems

More research is needed to fully understand how essentials oils can work for pain management. Although there’s generally no harm in adding essential oils to your current pain management plan, and they might allow you to reduce dosages of prescriptions.

What the research says

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate essential oils. This means that essential oil products can vary in purity, strength, and quality across manufacturers. Be sure to only purchase essential oils from reputable brands.

Essential oils can be inhaled or applied topically when mixed with a carrier oil. Never apply undiluted essential oils directly to the skin. Do not swallow essential oils. Do a skin patch test before applying diluted essential oils to your skin.

The following essential oils may help with pain relief.


According to a 2013 study, lavender essential oil may help treat pain in children after a tonsillectomy. Children who inhaled the scent of lavender were able to reduce their daily dose of acetaminophen post-surgery.

Researchers in a 2015 study found that lavender essential oil can be an effective analgesic and anti-inflammatory. When diluted lavender essential oil was applied topically during one test, it provided pain relief comparable to that of the prescription medication tramadol. This suggests that lavender could be used to help treat pain and any associated inflammation.

Another study in 2012 tested lavender essential oil’s ability to reduce pain in people who experience migraines. Results showed that inhaling the scent of lavender was effective in lessening the severity of migraine headache symptoms.

Rose oil

Many women experience abdominal cramping during menstruation. Rose essential oil aromatherapy has been shown to relieve pain associated with periods when paired with conventional treatment.

Research from 2013 suggests that rose oil aromatherapy may also be effective in alleviating pain caused by kidney stones when coupled with conventional therapy.


Bergamot essential oil aromatherapy is being used to treat neuropathic pain, which is often resistant to opioid pain medications. The results of a 2015 study found this therapy to be successful in reducing neuropathic pain.

Essential oil blends

Researchers in a 2012 study found a blend of essential oils to be effective in decreasing menstrual pain in terms of severity and duration. Participants used a cream containing lavender, clary sage, and marjoram to massage their lower bellies daily.

According to another study in 2013, an essential oil blend was successful in reducing discomfort and menstrual bleeding. Participants were massaged with a blend of cinnamon, clove, rose, and lavender in sweet almond oil. They were massaged once daily for seven days before their periods.

Another study showed the potential of an essential oil blend to lessen pain and reduce depression in people with terminal cancer. These participants had their hands massaged with bergamot, lavender, and frankincense in sweet almond oil.

How to use essential oils for pain relief

Be sure to use a carrier oil to dilute your chosen essential oil. Applying an undiluted essential oil can cause skin irritation and inflammation.

Common carrier oils include:

  • coconut
  • avocado
  • sweet almond
  • apricot kernel
  • sesame
  • jojoba
  • grapeseed

In general, you only need to use a few drops of essential oil. The dose can vary, but a good rule of thumb is to add about 10 drops of essential oil to every tablespoon of your carrier oil.

Before using a new essential oil, do a skin patch test to check its effects on your skin. Rub your diluted oil onto the inside of your forearm. If you don’t experience any irritation or discomfort within 24 to 48 hours, the oil should be safe for you to use.


Massaging diluted essential oil into the skin can help to loosen up muscles and alleviate pain. You can practice self-massage or opt for a professional massage using essential oils.


Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil to a diffuser and inhale the steam in a closed room. No carrier oil is necessary for this method.

If you don’t have a diffuser, you can fill up a bowl or plugged sink with hot water. Add a few drops of the essential oil to the water. Lean over the bowl or sink, cover your head with a towel, and inhale the steam. You can do this for up to 10 minutes.

Hot bath

You may also take a hot bath with essential oils. To dissolve the essential oil, first add 5 drops (the number of drops may change depending on the type of essential oil) to an ounce of carrier oil. If you don’t want oil in your bath, you can add the drops to a cup of milk and the essential oil will mix with the fats in milk. Sitting in the bath will allow the essential oil to enter your body through your skin. The steam that rises from the hot water can provide added aromatherapy. Avoid very hot baths as this can cause weakness or dizziness.

Risks and warnings

Always use caution when trying a new essential oil. Take care to dilute essential oils in a carrier oil such as olive oil or sweet almond oil. Never apply essential oils directly to the skin.

Some people can be allergic to some essential oils. To do a patch test, mix 3 to 5 drops of the essential oil with an ounce of carrier oil Apply a bit of this mixture to unbroken skin of your forearm, about the size of a dime. If no reaction in 24 to 48 hours it should be safe to use.

Talk to your doctor before use if you:

  • are pregnant
  • are nursing
  • have an existing medical condition
  • wish to use essential oils on children or older adults

Potential side effects of using essential oils include:

  • skin irritation
  • skin inflammation
  • sun sensitivity
  • allergic reaction

What you can do now

If you want to start using essential oils, do your research first. It’s important to be aware of the unique benefits and risks associated with each type of oil.

You also want to buy from a reputable brand. The FDA doesn’t regulate essential oils, so the ingredients in each product can vary across manufacturers. Some essential oils or oil blends may contain added ingredients that can cause adverse side effects.

You can purchase essential oils online or at your local holistic health store. It also may be helpful to speak with a certified aromatherapist. They can answer any questions you may have and help you pick out the essential oils best suited to your needs.

Be sure to

  • Always dilute oils before applying to your skin.
  • Perform a skin patch test to check for any irritation or inflammation.
  • Avoid applying essential oils to sensitive areas, such as around your eyes or near open wounds.
  • Discontinue use if you experience any irritation or discomfort.
  • Never ingest an essential oil.

How Sleep Affects Cancer

Poor Sleep Alters Hormones That Influence Cancer Cells

Oct. 1, 2003 — A new study shows that how well you sleep may determine how well your body fights cancer — and may help explain how mental well-being plays into cancerrecovery and progression.

After analyzing previous studies, Stanford University psychiatrist David Spiegel, MD, and colleague Sandra Sephton, MD, say that sleep problems alter the balance of at least two hormones that influence cancer cells.


Sleep, Hormones, and Cancer

One is cortisol, which helps to regulate immune system activity — including the release of certain “natural killer” cells that help the body battle cancer. Cortisol levels typically peak at dawn, after hours of sleep, and decline throughout the day.

Spiegel tells WebMD that night shift workers, who have higher rates of breast cancer than women who sleep normal hours, are more likely to have a “shifted cortisol rhythm,” in which their cortisol levels peak in the afternoon. At least two studies show those women typically die earlier from breast cancer.

“We also found that people who wake up repeatedly during the night are also more likely to have abnormal cortisol patterns,” he says.

Cortisol is the so-called “stress” hormone triggered, along with others, during times of anxiety and may play a role in the development and worsening of cancer and other conditions.

The other hormone affected by sleep is melatonin. Produced by the brain during sleep, melatonin may have antioxidant properties that help prevent damage to cells that can lead to cancer.

In addition, melatonin lowers estrogen production from the ovaries. Thus, a lack of sleep leads to too little melatonin. This series of events may expose women to high levels of estrogen and may increase the risk of breast cancer.

Spiegel says that women shift workers who are up all night produce less melatonin.

“There’s a definite hormonal pattern that is affected by sleep that in itself, can predict a more rapid progression of cancer,” he tells WebMD.

“Getting a good night’s sleep is fairly simple, if you allow yourself to do it. The big problem for cancer patients is they take too much on themselves and don’t give enough time to help their bodies cope with the illness. They’re worried about burdening their families and fulfilling their usual obligations.”

And that’s the real message of his study, in the October issue of Brain,Behavior and Immunity. Itindicates the importance of good sleep as one of several mind-body factors that might influence cancer outcome.

Sleep, Stress, and Cancer

Previous research, including some noted in Spiegel’s study, shows that cancer patients who manage their stress in group therapy, with good social networks, or with regular exercise often fare better than patients who don’t manage stress effectively.

“We know that people who are depressed or anxious have a specific pattern of sleep disturbances. And if you had a bad night’s sleep, you don’t handle stress as well,” says Spiegel. Conversely, those who better manage stress are more likely to have good sleep patterns.

Just last week, Swedish researchers said women under a lot of stress may double their risk of breast cancer compared with those who remain calm when life throws them a curveball.

“My advice for cancer patients is to try to handle stress well,” says Spiegel. “By doing all the things your grandmother told you to do — eat well, sleep well, and get plenty of exercise— you’re helping your body cope better with the disease.”

Does this mean that ensuring good sleep hygiene will become the big thing in cancer treatment? No, says Len Lichtenfeld, MD, of the American Cancer Society.

“But is this important for people to remember? Yes,” he tells WebMD.

“The bottom line of this report is that there is enough information to take seriously the idea that how our bodies respond to cancer is influenced by more than just the surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. It can be influenced by stress and sleep, and these are two pieces in the puzzle that shouldn’t be overlooked.”

Candida and Cancer: New Link or Old News

The causes of cancer seem to be as numerous as cancers themselves, but recent clinical research has demonstrated a link between certain types of cancer and the presence of fungus in the body. Candida abicans is one of the most common types of fungus (technically speaking, a yeast) that is present in small amounts in and on the human body. Under normal conditions, Candida cohabitates without causing us any problems. But when the environment is primed for it, Candida yeast can multiply and grow out of control.

Types Of Candida

The infection that results is known as candidiasis, and there are several different types:

  • Thrush – Candida yeast that spreads to the mouth and throat.
  • Genital Yeast Infection – Concentration of Candida in the genitals that affects three out of four women in their lifetime. Men can also get genital candida.
  • Diaper Rash from Yeast Infection – Candida that spreads under wet or soiled diapers.
  • Invasive Candida – Candida yeast that enters the bloodstream (often through medical devices).

Common Symptoms

Common symptoms associated with an overabundance of Candida include the aforementioned yeast and fungal infections across and within the body, but also extend to include:

  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Brain Fog
  • Digestive Issues
  • Food Allergy/Intolerance
  • Sinus Infections
  • Joint Pain
  • Low Mood
  • Weakened Immune System

Causes Of Candida

So, what is it then that causes Candida abicans to suddenly run amok and terrorize our physiology and immune system? Keep in mind that Candida lives in the digestive tract of most people already – candidiasis is an abnormal, excess growth of Candida. There are several primary and secondary contributors to an excess of Candida in the body:

  • High-Sugar Diet
  • Antibiotics
  • Chronic Stress
  • Contraceptive Pill
  • Dental Mercury
  • Chemical Exposure
  • Diabetes

3 Primary Causes Of Candida

We’ll discuss the first three, primary causes of candidiasis in people. Antibiotics are effective at killing harmful bacteria that cause infection in the body; the problem is that oftentimes the antibiotic will wipe out many of the beneficial bacteria that live in your gut and aid in proper digestion and food processing. Chronic psychological stress is another major factor that contributes to Candida.

Secondly, when under stress, the body releases a hormone known as cortisol which depresses the immune system and raises blood sugar levels. The Candida yeast will then seize this opportunity to feed on the extra sugar and multiply, while the immune system has become too weak to resist its spread.

This brings us to the third primary cause of Candida overgrowth: a high-sugar diet. Candida albicans is a yeast, and yeasts thrive by consuming carbon-based molecule chains. What this translates to for us is that Candida feeds on carbohydrates like glucose and fructose – simple sugars. The modern diet is loaded with simple carbohydrates from processed foods and beverages like sugar, flower, white breads, and alcohol. These simple sugars are easy for Candida to break down and so a sustained high-sugar, high-processed food diet like many people eat may essentially provide a non-stop buffet for Candida to flourish and spread.

Credible Scientific Studies

A 2011 study[LINK] ( published in the journal Fungal Genetics and Biology looked to examine what exactly is going on metabolically when Candida gets out of control. The research noted that Candida is a polymorphic fungus, which means that it is able to morph from its single-celled yeast form to a larger, filamentous form. It is when Candida grows into these long filaments that it is able to lodge into the intestinal lining and disrupt our gut ecology.

Dr. T.L. Han and his team were able to reconstruct the central carbon metabolism of C. abicans, showing that the presence of sugars like glucose leads to dimorphic transition into a virulent form of the fungus. Moreover, this sugar metabolism process leads to an increase in quorum sensing molecules that regulate gene expression. This means that the more glucose present, the more that Candida is able to grow and increase its gene expression within the body.

This information was supported by another study[LINK] ( published in Eukaryotic Cell. This study determined the presence within C. abicans of a glucose sensor gene called HGT4. High levels of glucose in the body cause expression of this HGT4 gene, which leads to filament growth and eventually the virulent form of Candida.

Percentage Of Cancer Patients Who Also Have Candida

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
